The Coppermine Tent Hostel opened in 1955 in what is now Nunavut. Students lived in wood-framed field tents and attended a federally funded day school in Coppermine. While the tents were easy to build, they were drafty, easily damaged by high winds, and difficult to heat. The hostel operated five months a year and housed 20 to 30 students most of whom were from the Coppermine area. In 1959 the hostel closed and most students were transferred to Inuvik.
