With the closing of St. Philip’s Residential School in Fort George in June of 1975, some of its former students were accommodated in the newly constructed Fort George Hostels. The hostels opened officially in January of 1976, and were jointly operated by Canada, the Fort George Band Council, and the Hostel Guardians. In 1978 the James Bay Agreement created the Cree School Board, responsible for the education of all Cree children in the James Bay region. Between 1979 and 1980 the Fort George community, including its schools, was relocated to Chisasibi as part of the James Bay hydro project.
