Federal Hostel at Lake Harbour (Kimmirut Hostel)

 -  1963 -1965

Religious Entity: Non-Denominational

The Federal Hostel at Lake Harbour was part of the Northern Affairs Branch (NAB) Small Hostels program. The Small Hostel setting was supposed to come close to the traditional home life of Inuit children. The hostels usually held eight beds each, and local community members worked as Hostel Mothers or Hostel Parents. Children staying in the hostels attended local day schools. The Lake Harbour facility was operated out of a federal building until an official hostel could be opened. Limited classroom space in the community during the 1960s mediated against boarding in too many children at any one time.
